Moxie* is a small art gallery in a small town on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. As an artist, I have strong ideas about how things should look. I needed to have control over the way it did look so that precluded having a group gallery. Call me a control freak if you wish. But you know what they say about committees. It’s true. I’ve served on a number of them. And a gallery, or any business really, that wants to stand out and be unique needs to have its own personality. That’s difficult to accomplish when a group is trying to run the show, with their conflicting ideas and visions.
As for the gallery’s tone or mood, I call it “warm contemporary” art. It’s not about sailboat art for tourists, and it’s not government-funded. I wanted a gallery that is accessible and yet not dumbed-down. A place just about anyone could walk into and see something they liked. All the time, keeping the standards and quality high. It’s the kind of place I’d like to frequent–beautiful, changeable and interesting. Hey, it’s a place I do frequent, on an almost daily basis! Being surrounded by gorgeous art, in a quaint seaside setting, well, what more could I ask?
